And ,it depends on the establishment. In some places it’s great to have that level of communication; but in others the time may not be appropriate. It should always be left to the patron to set the tone of discourse.

I find it disrespectful. I wish their nametags would have their surnames and then I could say Miss or Mr. Last Name, which is more appropriate in this setting. A young woman I work with used to be a waitress and she said she hated it because she felt as if people didn’t see her as a person. She was a nonentity only there to serve them. Customers calling her by her first name did not help. It’s too familiar, too soon. However, I bet if people had called her Miss LastName, she wouldn’t have felt quite so invisible.
